Q. A gaseous compound of nitrogen and oxygen is paramagnetic in nature. When it is cooled below $0^\circ C$ its molecular mass increases and paramagnetism is lost. The behaviour is reversed on heating. The compound is

Solution:

$NO_{2}$ is paramagnetic because of unpaired electron. On cooling $NO_{2}$ below $0^\circ C$ , it dimerises to $N_{2}O_{4}$ which does not have any unpaired electrons. Hence, no paramagnetism is show by the dimer, $N_{2}O_{4}$ .
