Q. A gas container contain $35\, gm$ nitrogen gas, $64 \,gm,\, O _{2}$ gas and $0.112$ lit of $CH _{4}$ at $STP$, what is average molecular weight of the gas mixture?

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

$35\, gm$ nitrogen $=\frac{35}{28}=1.25 \,$ mole
$64 \,gm\,$ oxygen $=\frac{64}{32}=2$ mole
$0.112$ lit $CH _{4}$ at $STP =\frac{0.112}{22.4}=0.005$ mole
$\therefore \Sigma nj =1.25+2+0.005=3.255 $
$\therefore M _{ avg }=\frac{1.25 \times 28+2 \times 32+0.005 \times 16}{3.255} $
$=\frac{35+64+0.08}{3.255}=\frac{99.08}{3.255}=30.44$
