Q. A force of 100 N need to be applied parallel to a smooth inclined plane just to hold a body on it. The angle of inclination of the inclined plane is $30^{\circ}$ How much horizontal force need to be applied to do the same?

Laws of Motion

Solution:

Given that $mg\,sin\,\theta=100\,N$
If horizontal force required be $F$, then component of $F$ will balance the weight
i.e., $F\,cos\,\theta=100$
or $F=\frac{100}{cos\,\theta}$
$=\frac{100}{cos\,30^{\circ}}$
$=115\,N$
