Q. A compound $X$ formed after heating coke with lime reacts with water to give $Y$ which on passing over red-hot iron at $873\, K$ produces $Z$. The compound $Z$ is

Solution:

When coke is heated with lime $\left(CaO\right)$, then $CaC_{2}\left(X\right)$ is formed which then reacts with water to form acetylene $\left(Y\right)$ as a major product. This acetylene on passing over red hot iron at $873\, K$ produces benzene $\left(Z\right)$.
