Q. A compound $C _{9} H _{12} O (A)$, is oxidised under vigorous conditions to benzoic acid. $(A)$ reacts with $CrO _{3}$ and gives a positive iodoform test. Mark out the incorrect statement about the compound $(A)$.

Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

As the compound is giving benzoic acid on vigorous oxidation thus it should be a phenyl ketone or alcohol and as it giving positive iodoform test thus it should contain

$- \underset{\overset{||}{O}}{C} - CH_3$ or $ - \overset{\underset{|}{O}H}{CH}-CH_3$ group

From the given formula $C _{9} H _{12} O$ the possible structure is

It will not give violet colour with $FeCl _{3}$ because it is not the derivative of phenol.
