Q. A boy can throw a stone up to a maximum height of $10\,m$. The maximum horizontal distance that the boy can throw the same stone up to will be :

AIEEEAIEEE 2012Motion in a Plane

Solution:

For vertically projected up body maximum height $( H )$ is given as $H =\frac{ u ^2}{(2 g )}$
For the same bocy with same initial velocity the horizontal distance traveled when thrown at an $\operatorname{angle}(\theta)$ is given as
$ R =\frac{ u ^2}{ g } \text {. } $
Compare equations 1 and 2
$ \begin{array}{l} R =2 H \\ R =2 \times 10 \\ R =20 m \end{array} $
