Q. A block of mass $2.5 \, kg$ is heated to temperature of $500^{\circ} C$ and placed on a large ice block. If the maximum amount of ice that can melt (approx.)is $\frac{x}{2}$ find $x$. Specific heat for the body $=0.1 \, Cal$ $gm ^{-1}{ }^{\circ} C$. (in $kg$ ) and latent heat of ice is, $L_f=80 $ cal $ g ^{-1}$

Solution:

Let the amount of ice that melts is $m$ .
Then,
$m\times 80=2500\times 0.1\times 500\Rightarrow m=1562.5g\Rightarrow m\approx1.5kg=\frac{3}{2}kg$
