Q. A bird flies at an angle of $ 60^{\circ} $ to the horizontal. Its horizontal component of velocity is $ 10\, m\, s ^{-1} $ . Find the vertical component of velocity in $ m s ^{-1} $ .

Solution:

$\theta=60^{\circ}, u_{x}=10\,m\,s^{-1}, u_{y}=?$
As tan $\theta=\frac{u_{y}}{u_{x}} $
$\therefore u_{y}=u_{x} tan \,\theta=10\times\sqrt{3}$
$=10\sqrt{3}\,m\,s^{-1}$
