Q. $ 100\, mL $ of $ 0.1 \,M \,H_2SO_4 $ is mixed with $ 100 \,mL $ of $ 0.1 \,NaOH $ . The normality of the solution obtained is

AMUAMU 2013Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

$N_1V_1 = 0.2 \times 100 = 20$
$(0.1\,MH_2SO_4 = 0.2 \,NH_2 SO_4)$ acid
$N_2V_2 = 0.1 \times 100 = 10 $ (base)
$N_1V_1 $ acid $ > N_2V_2$ base hence, resultant mixture is acidic.
Resultant normality
$ = \frac{N_1V_1 - N_2V_2}{V_1 + V_2} = \frac{20-10}{200}$
$ = \frac{10}{200} = 0.05 \,N$
