Q. 10 mL of liquid carbon disulphide (specific gravity 2.63) is burnt in oxygen. Find the volume of the resulting gases measured at STP.

AIIMSAIIMS 2016Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

1 mL of CS2 weighs 2.63 g
10 mL of CS2 weighs 26.3 g
$\begin{matrix}CS_{2}&+&3O_{2}&\to&\\ 12+\left(2\times32\right)&&&&\\ 76 g&&&&\end{matrix}\underbrace{CO_{2}\quad+\quad2SO_{2} 22.4 L\quad\quad44.8L}_{67.2 L}$
$\because \quad$76 g of CS$_{2}$ will yield 67.2 L of a mixture of CO$_{2}$ and SO$_{2}$ at STP
$\because \quad$ 26.3 g of CS$_{2}$ would yield $ \frac{67.2}{76}\times26.3 $ = 23.25 L
