Mitochondria is the site for aerobic respiration. It is surrounded by two membranes, the outer membrane which is smooth, and the inner membrane which is folded into finger-like projections called cristae. Mitochondria divide by fission to increases its number. Anaerobic respiration takes place in the cytoplasm.
