Only the salts of strong acid and weak base or weak acid and strong base undergo hydrolysis to produce acidic or alkaline solutions.
(i) Na2SO4 : Salt of strong acid H2SO4 and strong base NaOH .
(ii) NaCl: Salt of strong acid HCl and strong base NaOH .
(iii) CaCl2 : Salt of strong acid HCl and strong base Ca(OH)2 . ∵Na2SO4,NaCl and CaCl2 are salts of strong acid and strong base. ∴ They do not undergo hydrolysis.
(iv) NH4Cl : Salt of weak base NH4OH and strong acid HCl . ∴NH4Cl hydrolyses as follows: NH4Cl+H2O→NH2OH+HCl
The resulting solution is acidic because HCl is strong acid.
