Mitochondria possess their own circular DNA (mtDNA) which can replicate independently. mtDNA can produce its own mRNA and protein and some of the enzymes required for functioning. They can produce new mitochondria by division or binary fission from pre-existing mitochondria. Mitochondria also have their own ribosomes but they are of 70S type like that of prokaryotes.
