The splitting of water is associated with the PSII and takes place on the inner side of the membrane, the protons or hydrogen ions that are produced by the splitting of water accumulate within the lumen of the thylakoids. This also creates oxygen, one of the net product of photosynthesis. The accumulation of protons in lumen of thylakoids generates proton gradient which is responsible for generating ATP.
