In spermatophytes, pollen tubes are developed to carry the male gametes to the egg cells for fertilization. In bryophytes, pteridophytes and cryptogams the male gametes are motile and therefore swim in the watery medium (external water) to reach the female gametes, the fusion of which result in fertilization.
