Normally, the breathing process (inspiration and expiration) is controlled involuntarily by a breathing centre located in the medulla oblongata. The ventral portion of the breathing centre (inspiratory centre) increases the rate and depth of inspiration while the dorsal and lateral portions of the centre (expiratory centre) inhibit inspiration and simulate expiration.
