The functional unit of DNA having a group of genes regulated by a single promoter is termed as an operon. Operon holds the promoter, operator, and the structural genes which express to produce the necessary protein Intron are not part of the operon. Lac operon is one of the most widely studied operon models.
Repressor protein is part of the gene expression regulation where it inhibits the expression of a gene by attaching to the operator part of the regulatory unit.
Lac operon is activated by the removal of the repressor protein. Binding of the lactose to repressor protein exposes the operator part of the gene and initiates its expression.
