In most higher plants, the growing apical bud inhibits growth of the lateral buds, a phenomenon called apical dominance and is induced by auxins like NAA, 2,4 D, IAA etc. Removal of shoot tips (decapitation) or addition of cytokinins like zeatin, kinetic etc., usually results in the growth of lateral buds. It is widely applied in tea plantation, hedge making. Cytokinin helps to overcome apical dominance.
