Genetic material of prokaryotic cell is called nucleoid. In prokaryotic cell, the nucleus is without a nuclear membrane, due to which substances usually present in the nucleus (proteins, DNA) remain diffused in the central part of the cell in direct contact with the cytoplasm. It is generally concentrated towards the centre of the cell in a region called the nucleoid. In these cells, the DNA is not associated with histone proteins.
