Symphysis refers to joints in which the bones are separated by fibrocartilage (tough cartilage containing dense bundles of fibres in matrix), which minimizes movement and makes bony structure rigid. Examples are pubic symphysis (joint between pubic bones of pelvis) and joints of backbone separated by intervertebral disc.
