Mitochondria are filamentous, rod shaped bodies of 3−5μ diameter and 40μ length, cytoplasmic cell organelles, occur only in eukaryotic cells. These are known as 'power house' of the cell; because, these are the sites of production of energy rich molecules called ATP (Adenosine Tri Phosphate). ATP is a high energy bound phosphate molecule it provides energy for approximately all biological processes, taking place within a cell.
