Pneumatophores are also called aerophores or breathing roots or respiratory roots found in the mangroves or saline swamps, for example, Rhizophora, Avicennia, Sonneratia, etc. They are the modifications of taproot for gaseous exchange. These are pencil-like roots that are branches of main roots that grow vertically above the ground and bear a small opening called pneumathodes or lenticels for respiration.
