Solution:

Algae are classified into three main classes, Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Rhodophyceae. The basic criteria used for this classification are (i) nature of pigment, (ii) reserve food material, (iii) nature of flagella, (iv) cell wall, and its chemical composition, etc.
The nature of pigment present in the organism is the most important criterion for classification. The Rhodophyceae members possess photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll a and d. Besides these major pigments, minor pigments like r-phycoerythrin and r-phycocyanin are the types of phycobilins that impart red-green colour are also present.
