India has 2.4 per cent of worlds area with 8 per cent of global bio-diversity. It is one of the 12 mega-diversity hot-spot regions of the world. Other countries being Brazil, Columbia, China, South Africa, Mexico, Venezuela, Indonesia, Ecuador, Peru, USA and Bolivia. Across the country, the forests of India are estimated to harbour 90 per cent of Indias medicinal plants diversity in the wide range of forest types that occur. Only about 10 per cent of the known medicinal plant of India are restricted to non-forest habitats. The estimated numbers of plant species and those used for medicinal purpose vary.
