Average speed is the arithmetic mean of the speeds of molecules in a gas at a given temperature, ie, vav=(v1+v2+v3+…)/N
and according to kinetic theory of gases, vav=Mπ8RT...(i)
Also, rms speed (root mean square speed) is defined as the square root of mean of squares of the speed of different molecules, ie, vrms=(v12+v22+v32+…)/N<br/><br/>=(vˉ)2
and according to kinetic theory of gases, vrms=M3RT...(ii)
From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get vav=(3π8)vrms=0.92vrms...(iii)
Therefore, vrmsvav= constant
Hence, root mean square-velocity is also become 4 times.
