Weismann gave the germplasm theory. According to it nuclei of an individual germ cells, unlike those of its body cells, are qualitatively identical to the nucleus of the zygote from which the individual developed i.e. cellular differentiation was preceeded by some loss of material from the nucleus of a cell, but that heredity from one generation to another was brought about by transferences of a complex nuclear substance (germplasm).
