Q. Gas exchange at the respiratory membrane is efficient because
I. the differences in partial pressure are substantial.
II. the gases are lipid-soluble.
III. blood flow is very rapid.
IV. the distance is minimized by having only one cell layer.
V. the total surface area is large.

Solution:

When oxygen is transported to the blood and carbon-d-oxide is removed from the blood it is known as gas exchange. This exchange of gases takes place across the respiratory membrane which is thin with a high surface area having a single cell layer. The efficiency is also due to the lipid solubility of carbon-di-oxide and oxygen their partial pressures differences which make the exchange of gases possible.
