Solution:
The primary effluent was passed into large aeration tanks with constant agitation and the air was pumped into it. This allowed the vigorous growth of useful aerobic microbes like bacteria and fungi to form mesh-like flocs. The microbes consumes a significant part of the organic matter in the effluent and reduced its BOD.
