The growth that occurs at a constant rate is known as the arithmetic growth, which is followed by the mitotic cell division. Only one daughter cell continues to divide while the other differentiates and other undergoes maturation. Root elongates at a constant rate thus shows arithmetic growth. An increase in girth of plant shows variable growth, and it depends upon the environmental condition and is a secondary growth involving differentiation.
