CuSO4 reacts with KCN to give a white precipitate of cuprous cyanide and cyanogen gas.
The cuprous cyanide dissolves in excess of KCN forming K3[Cu(CN)4] Unstable CuSO4+2KCN→K2SO4+Cu(CN)2 Insoluble cyanogen 2Cu(CN)2→2CuCN+CN−CN Soluble CuCN+3KCN→K3[Cu(CN)4]
