Martinus William Beijernick (a Dutch microbiologist and botanist) gave a phrase, " Contagium vivum fluidum" (Latin : "contagious living fluid"), to describe a virus. He underlined its (virus's) ability to slip through the finest mesh filters then available, giving it almost liquid properties.
