Chordae tendinae (tendinous cords) are tough strands of connective tissue that run from the underside of the bicuspid and tricuspid valves to special muscles in the walls of the ventricles of the heart i.e. papillary muscles. The chordae tendinae prevent the bicuspid and tricuspid valves from collasping back into atria during powerful ventricular contractions.
