The cell wall was first observed and named by Robert Hooke in 1665. It is a structural layer that surrounds some types of cells and situated outside the cell membrane. They provide cell structural support and protection. The cell wall in prokaryotes is made up of peptidoglycan and in eukaryotes, it is made up of polysaccharide and cellulose. The cell wall is completely permeable to water, molecules, and proteins.
