Mycoplasmas are bacteria that do not form cell walls. Because they lack cell walls, they are highly pleomorphic. They can produce filaments that resemble fungi; hence, their name. Mycoplasma cells are very small, ranging in size from 0.1 to 0.25urn. Mycoplasma can be grown as artificial media that provide them sterols (if necessary) and other special nutritional or physical requirements.
