Monocotyledonous plants are subgroup of Angiosperms characterized by having one embryonic leaf or one cotyledon in their seed. Anatomically the root system of monocots has certain distinguishing feature even though it is similar to that of dicot plant root system.
The root lacks cambium in it and has no secondary growth. The number of xylem bundles are more than dicot, having higher than six. The pith region of monocots is larger in size and better developed than dicots.
