Oersteds experiment was conducted to answer this fact.
Oersted in 1820, found experimentally that a magnetic field is established around a current carrying conductor conducting wire AB is connected to the poles of a battery through a Conducting wire key. So, long as there is no current in the wire, there is no deflection in the needle (figure 1).
As soon as current is made to flow in the wire, deflection is produced in the needle (figure 2) proving the fact that current carrying wire in the neighborhood produces magnetic field only.
